I agree with this too. When I first started with linux I followed the advice
to have several different partitions and they kept turning out to be the
wrong size. I now have just / + swap and find it far better.
However, I have two hard disks and I back up /home, /var, and /etc to it
nightly, so if the worst comes to the worst I can restore them. I know there
are good arguments against backing up to another hard disk but floppies are
too much trouble and I can't afford a tape drive, so I hope for the best.
