Well, here we're running a Pentium/60 with 48 MB RAM and a 4.0 GB EIDE hard drive, with a 33.6 modem for internet feed and a 12 workstation LAN (Win95 and MacOS boxes). It also runs Apache as a proxy web-server, and X Windows (Netscape, ApplixWare) for a couple of X terminals, as well as three terminals (VT220) hooked up to standard PC COM ports. It manages IP routing, HTTP proxy, Samba and Netatalk file/print services, an HP LaserJet 5L (exported as a postscript printer using Ghostscript 5.0), et cetera, all on RedHat 5 and without breaking a sweat. On top of all that, I and a few others do our GCC CGI script development (C/C++) on this beast and test it on the LAN before uploading it to the main server across the modem connection, where our 'real' Internet box sits on the ethernet backbone across campus. uptime usually looks something like this: [crank@sprawl /tmp]$ uptime 1:45am up 3 days, 3:20, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.03, 0.01 That's more than enough hardware, IMHO. > I am curious as to what kind of load using Linux as a router places on > a machine.
