The isapnptools (on sunsite, I believe) are also useful for coping with
ISA PnP cards. PCI cards (almost) all work, they are inherently
Plug-n-Play and actually work. The isapnptools allow you to read and
write the PnP registers on cards from user space (you must be root of
course) and configure their addresses, IRQ's, etc. Handy stuff. It can
even be automated so it runs at boot time. Unfortunately, drivers for any
PnP cards must be loaded as modules, because you have to initialize them
before you can load the drivers.
