Actually it's even easier than that. The "route" command from a pound sign
will set your default gateway for you. Here's the example from the man
page for 'route':

   route add default gw mango-gw  

Substitute your router's IP address or host name where it says 'mango-gw'.

Of course DO change the default gateway in /etc/sysconfig/network, so that
the next time you reboot (maybe next year) it'll come back with the
default gateway, but you don't need to down the machine to get the gateway
changed -- or even down your networking. This is Linux, not some hopped-up
program loader with delusions of grandeur.
