No but look at the /etc/X11/xdm or /etc/X11/xinit files 
startx looks at /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
xdm looks at /etc/X11/xdm-config
in those two files other files are defined which will be read. the
procedure is more or less user defined ( or rather distribution defined) 
so I doubt you'll find a reference.
