There are plenty of fonts available, just have to go download
them. There are some console-based fonts in the slackware distribution
(mr.fnt is my favorite), and there are plenty of x-based fonts on sunsite
or mirrors thereof. Check out ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts.
You might be interested in the following packages:

freefonts-0.10.tar.gz - just what the name sez
sharefonts-0.10.tar.gz - shareware fonts
Xfstt-0.9.9.tgz - a truetype font server for linux/X11

The first two are self-explanatory, just packs of fonts for X. The
third package is actually a true-type server for X. It allows you to use
windows/mac true-type fonts in X. I use it, and it works quite well. I've
got around 390 fonts installed there, not to mention the freefonts and
sharefonts packages, so you can imagine GIMP is pretty fun now :)
