If the emacs package is corrupt, which it may well be considering what
you've written above, I'd just punt on its installation (i.e., install
everything except emacs) and go get xemacs from the hurricane contrib
area on ftp.redhat.com.
xemacs is like emacs, only better - or at least some people think so.
