Recently caught the Linux bug. Been studying and preparing, evaluating
distributions, etc. I'm picking up RH5.1 soon, but just to get ready, I
tried to install an old copy of 4.0 a friend had on my old P75. Install
seemed to go OK, except that a few packages failed near the end of
installation.
When the system rebooted, everything seemed fine: root, swap, mouse, CD,
floppy, all recognized and ready,
BUT THEN

INIT: ID "1" respawning too fast: disabled for five minutes
INIT: cannot execute "sbin/mingetty"

This is repeated through ID 6, at which point the system stops. No command
prompt. I can't even look to see what's missing. Any ideas, short of
wiping the disk and starting again? (which I'm going to do soon anyway..)

Thanks in advance:
