Subject: How can linux do this?

It works just fine here.

Research "roaming profiles".

To make a Linux box serve it up would require Samba to do something that it
didn't do in the versions I've used. It's an NT-specific deal. However,
Samba has been adding a whole lot of NT functionality lately, so they may
very well have added support for NT roaming profiles.

The solution to what you say above is simple; don't use roaming profiles
unless you:

1) Have all your machines set up substantially the same. (We do.)

2) Have applications running on a network server. (We do, where practical
and possible.)

3) Educate your users that just because the icon says FooBar does not mean
that FooBar is necessarily installed on that machine. (We do this, in the
case of the few people who run something special that isn't on all the
machines.)
