As usual, I'm sure that others would be better qualified for this than I
am, and yet I blab away. . .

There are a couple of ways that this could be accomplished. I'm not
sure of an automatic, NT-style implementation, and I suspect that a
Linux environment will tend to tilt away from that sort of setup because
of the way that users and desktop environments are managed. Of course,
you could just pay careful attention to setting up your user accounts
identically on all of the machines you access, and keeping them up to
date; or you could go the VNC route, have a single desktop, and just
'take it with you' to whichever machine you happen to be using.

Note that if you use the VNC approach, you don't have identical setups
on several different machines, but rather a single desktop running on a
single machine which can then be accessed from just about anywhere
(other Linux box, NT/95 machine, or if the hype can be believed, even a
PalmPilot). On that desktop, though, you could arrange to have links to
resources on other machines, so the effect would be very similar to what
you're describing with NT.

As I think more about this, VNC sounds like a really good way to do that
particular NT trick better than NT does it. When you sit down at some
machine and open your desktop, you won't just get something that looks
like the last session you ran, rather you'll GET the last session you
ran, warts and all, unless you explicitly restart your VNC server or the
machine it runs on. And because this is X, there's no real need to have
desktops running on more than one machine; rather, you set up accounts
on all the machines you use which have $DISPLAY set to point at your VNC
desktop, so whenever you run an app under Xwindows, it will display on
your desktop, wherever you are.

Does this make sense and/or help? More info on VNC can be had from
