Netatalk does work. I'm am just setting it up now. On the mac, I think you
have to select ethertalk not appletalk. The mac should connect to the
netatalk machine just as if the netatalk machine is a macintosh file
server. I assume you have seen <http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/>
It lists a netatalk on linux mailing list which I have found helpful.
