1) Redhat Linux is supported by this awesome mailing list, and the others
    aren't.

2) RedHat, Caldera, SuSE, and Slackware are Linux, and FreeBSD isn't.

3) RedHat, Caldera, and SuSE use Red Hat's RPM package manager, and
FreeBSD and Slackware don't. Caldera doesn't seem to keep up with
the evolution of RPM, though, and IIRC they were talking about splitting
off development of their own version.

4) RedHat gets very frequent updates (errata) to fix security problems.
I'm not sure about FreeBSD and SuSE. Caldera and Slackware seem to
    lag way behind.

5) FreeBSD and SuSE come with more packages than Red Hat. However, IMHO
it is mostly shovelware. Red Hat sticks mainly to packages that are of
general usage, i.e., stuff that is important to keep your system running.
They don't include a lot of ASIC design packages, COBOL compilers, and
other specialized cruft. Also, they atually try to make sure that all
their packages actually work. They mostly (but not completely) succeed.

6) Red Hat sells cool red hats.

I'm sure that there are many other areas for comparison that I've forgotten.
However, these were the reasons that influenced my decision. (OK, maybe I
wasn't too concerned about number 6.)

You didn't include Debian Linux in your list. If I were doing an evaluation
now, I'd probably include Debian, and not concern myself with Slackware.

Cheers,
Eric
