My locale is en-NZ which I thought would have not had that problem.
Even if that were the problem, what explains not having the problem
until R-2.6.0, and then not at the beginning?

I suspect that the problem has to do with the old OS.  I don't have it
with Fedora Core 6, nor with Mepis 6.5.  But even then, that doesn't
explain why it initially worked on the RHEL3.  

On the other hand, if there's something about one of the recommended
packages which takes the font description more pedantically than it
used to, it MIGHT just explain why it used to work before I did an
update.packages.  I don't know just which packages were updated.

If anyone else has had any experience that would point to or against
this idea, I'd like to know about it.
