Tests are huge and take hours to run. On hardware which, for my standards, is
pretty capable, tests hit swap regularly. Nevertheless, for my usecase the
port works on arm64 and amd64.

I've looked into some tests, yes. Some seem to be related to tests being not
up to date with py-tables being python3 only now. But 10% failing out of well
over 7000 tests is still quite some work.

TESTLIBDIR stems from py-numexpr. I would not expect problems from this
exact and well defined line as py-numexpr works on macppc/powerpc too, for
example (or at least used to work, unfortunately my macppc died - but the
package is there).

Still OK or should I invest more in tests?
