ok One last thing I want to make clear: if grpc should cause any issue with a future protobuf update, someone other than me (aka you) will have to figure out how to move forward. While I've been the de facto maintainer of protobuf for about seven years now, the only reason I've been doing it is because no one else seems to care enough. I don't enjoy it nor do I use this. It would be great if someone actually relying on it did that grunt work...
