what do you mean?!?! i've been tuning my system to allow succesfull use of ls and emacs for decades! what a crazy idea that software should "Just Work", in these days of rampant elephants, that idea will never take off. I really have no idea what "control over memory" means. The only "control" method I know is MAP_FIXED in mmap. If deep down that means a love affair with MAP_FIXED is going on, the pain will continue until it stops doing that.
