I'm using the default datasize-cur limit for "staff" (4GB) and haven't been able to provoke it into crashing by doing this yet (tried it with a 8590x6000 TIFF). Wonder if something else is involved. If you do the above from "/bin/time -l gimp" (with raised limits so it doesn't crash), what's the maximum rss that you see?
