PDX is actually CenturyLink territory. Some of the surrounding areas used
to be Verizon, but have been sold off twice since then.

As for routers, I have been trying to get a Linux system to work plugged
directly into the ONT, and have not yet gotten it to work. I do know the
factors that need to be employed. Yes, pppoe creds is one of them, and a
wide variety of dedicated router boxes support that. What is less widely
supported, yet also required for a fiber connection to work, is VLAN
tagging. People have placed a managed switch in between the router and ONT
to get around this problem, by tagging the traffic for you.
