I use CLI mplayer without any issues for over 2 decades by now (sometimes switching mpv) for both audio and video because it can be controlled by keyboard. See man mplayer after you installed it.
That said - what you really need is automated - subtitle extraction. It listens to the track, transcribing it to .srt test file with time stamps. You could then use the .srt file to jump to a place in the track or simply read what you need from it. Maybe - someone here would have experience with subtitle extraction. I do not.
