How about a diff between the working .local and the broken .local? I could swear that it was someone here who suggested creating a new user, then polluting the new user with configs from my real account. And I did create a new user back then. The new user had metacity just fine. And I copied all my Gnome configs to the new user, and the new user still had metacity. But that was OpenSuse 11.2 or 11.1. I just tried it again on my new Fedora 11 installation, and got the same results - the new user still had metacity. But then I copied my .local folder to the new user. After copying my .local folder to the new user, the new user lost metacity. That's the good news. The bad news is that the .local folder has lots of stuff in it and I can't figure out which file makes metacity start on login. Or maybe the problem is a file that is missing. But I'm *that* close.
