I can start metacity just fine from a Gnome terminal, as long as X is running.
In this case gnome-panel was still running, so all I had to do was click on
Applications > System > Terminal, then type the command "metacity" and hit
Enter. That is how I am functioning at the moment.

In the past I lost both metacity and gnome-panel. 

Considering that this has happened after installing five different distros, I
really need to figure out what is causing it. Or at least, how to repair it.
Reinstalling from scratch after two days of configurations and installing
applications is getting old.
