It sounds like you're mixing grubs; grub on your knoppix disc is probably
"legacy grub" while ubuntu has moved to grub2.  Probably you'll want to
just do a clean install of ubuntu which will install grub2 and set it up.
If you want to revert back to the old grub there is a wiki page on the
ubuntu site that outlines the process.  Things get a lot weirder if, like
me, you're multi-booting using a different bootloader that needs to
chain-load grub from the linux partition's VBR.  gurb2 apparently isn't
intended for such use so I had to blow away the grub2 stuff and install
legacy grub to the partition's superblock.  Big fun...
