I had looked at it, but I hadn't considered importing PDF. Amazingly,
it seems to do a good job of it. That is, it maintains it as vectors.
And its native format is SVG, so it may be a solution to getting the
formulas into Scribus, which is their ultimate destination.

I still have to create them in something like LyX, export as PDF from
LyX, import into Inkscape, export as SVG, then import into Scribus. For
hundreds of formulas (which I create as I am writing the book), that is
a pain. It would be far better if Inkscape could create the formula
itself, but it doesn't seem to have that functionality. Nevertheless,
push come to shove, it may be the best alternative. Thanks for bringing
it to my attention.
