I think, SvgItem is better than IconWidget even if it isn't possible to
implement such highlighting as IconWidget has.

I worry about time. Sometimes it isn't possible to continue work because it
depends on code that isn't approved yet.

IconWidget is something we want to get rid of at some point anyway.

We've found working solutions, if you run into problems, feel free to ping me.

Quite easy to do with the MouseArea.

That's as easy as:
onPressed: PlasmaExtras.PressedAnimation {}
onReleased: PlasmaExtras.ReleaseAnimation {}
