The plastic is quite resilient, but it doesn't always spring back into shape :( If you could look on the interior surface of the dent my guess is you would find a crack or fracture where it protrudes, which fortunately doesn't extend back to the surface through the full thickness of the plastic. Such a crack would deny the plastic the tension it needs to recover its original shape.
