Only about 60 million of them in this load, though. Our San Diego hotel sits between the Convention Center (and a harborfull of billionaires’ yachts), and the 20-acre terminal of the Dole Fruit Company. From our hotel window we could watch the activity there.
Sniffing around the web, I learned that San Diego is Dole's largest terminal, with four smaller ones on the Gulf and East coasts. Dole owns about 20 refrigerated container ships (each container has its own chiller, using power from the ship); each ship carries about 300 containers. Most carry bananas, while others carry pineapples. Other fruit companies lease container space and ships rather than owning a fleet. These are unusual for container ships, because they have their own cranes (Central American port facilities are apparently not relaible that way). This ship was unloading containers with the front crane at the same time as the rear crane was loading empties. More that you ever wanted to know, right? I think I’ll have a banana with my tea… https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2021/October-2021/San-Diego/i-JMxJfM5/A Rick -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
