Magnolias can be messy, but the blooming season is short, and where they
are located in our yard is never a problem.

I have heard many different species referred to as "tulip trees," but I
never use that name for magnolias.;  I am most familiar with the African
Tulip Tree, which is an invasive species in Hawaii:
