I had mixed feelings about it - didn't know the rocks in the background
were underwater either - thought you had reduced contrast in photoshop
and darkened that out-of-focus area.
Glad to hear it was an experiment , an exercise, because I can see
it as that, as in a classroom, it comes off to me as rather clinical.
Your feelings about the subject matter are absent.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The dark area is under water, and
further away from the rocks in the foreground. I wanted to divide the
frame like this, one part clearly visible, the other part darker and
less defined. You should be able to see the rocks there, but with less
texture.
