Last night I was at two camera stores. At the first, I spoke with David, one of the
store's salesmen and a highly opinionated longtime film-camera enthusisast. His early
work was with Pentax screwmount and K mount gear. Now he shoots Contax 35mm and medium
format.

David explained to me why he is moving toward a switch to Canon EOS. "For the image
stabilization?" I guessed.

"No," he said, "for their superior metering capabilities." Plus the ease with which he
can borronw or rent lenses.

Later, at Ace Photo, a 50-ish dentist was shopping for his first digital camera,
something "with at least 2 megapixels." (A fairly modest requirement, these days) He
had been using a film-based SLR with a macro lens to get his dental shots, but now he
hopes to do the same digitally. This way, he explained, he can send shots instantly to
insurance companies and other dentists.

He said he wants an SLR, "because that's why I've been using." But when he heard how
costly the digital SLRs run, he backed down. He's looking to spend only about $1000
and needs a 1:1 macro capability or better.

I mentioned the Lester Dyne version of the Kiron 105/2.8 1:1 macro lens. He was
familiar with it and said that Lester Dyne is still around, making dental versions of
lenses for digital cameras, too. Lester, at least, can read the writing on the wall.
