When I was shooting with the DS, I'd standardized on 2G SD cards. Just run them to full, put them into the card wallet when done, and pop in another. They're so cheap nowadays I wouldn't worry too much about it. Given the size of DS raw files, an 8G card is probably more than adequate. But assuming the DS works correctly with SDHC cards, you can use up to 32G cards easily.
The DS will accept SDHC cards, but the firmware needs to have been updated to version 2 (version 2.02 is the latest).
