As you say, they were the pro shop, so they dealt with the pros.

As some long-time PDMLers will know, the 250-600 came from a pro
NASCAR photographer who was (reluctantly) changing brands to Nikon
at the instigation of his editor, who was asking for digital images
(this was back when the D1 was the new camera in the Nikon lineup).
It's an ideal motosports lens, but there was absolutely no way that
I could consider spending the $7500-$8000 street price ($11000 list)
on a lens I'd only use occasionally.  Even the second-hand price
was enough to make me pause, although not for more than a minute ...
That was the first time I'd ever seen that lens available used.
Since then I believe another one has showed up, but that still
only makes the used availability about one every decade or so.

Some of the other PDMLers have had a brief chance to play with the
lens, too.  In fact I'm wondering if there's a way to widen the
circle; I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that the lens has pretty
much stayed in its case for the last couple of years.
