I just had another look.... it appears that in order to mount it on the
lamp stand the PO had opened the head up and fitted a 3/8" whit bolt
down through the mounting hole. I have removed it and now have the
normal 3/8" female thread. I have ordered a 3/8 to 1/4 adaptor as Bruce
suggested (thanks) so in few days I should be cooking with gas.
Just as an aside... I have just used the Whitworth thread gauge plate I
made as an apprentice 20 years ago for the first time.
