Nice shot. Very nice. Pretty girl as well.
I only wish we could see a bit more of the cake, but that's a nit.

Paul

I hear you Paul, and I wish we could too. :)

This shot stands as a sad lesson in preparedness. I saw that the "cake" (actually a tray of cupcakes, one candle on each) was being taken to the table and the birthday girls rounded-up. I /thought/ I had the camera all set and I moved into position.

But as Olivia started to blow out candles and I looked though the viewfinder I discovered that I had left the focus-point set at the right-most point (I had been doing vertical portrait shots just prior). I swore under my breath and struggled with the camera for a bit, but even after 2 years of using it, I'm still not at the point where I can quickly get to some settings in a panic.

So, executive decision time: running out of lit candles here. I just aimed for her right eye using the right-most focus-point and framed as best I could. I got exactly one shot like that--this one.

Even still, I'm happy that it wasn't a total loss. I cropped it to square to get rid of a ton of dead space on the left. I used Noiseware on it and selective sharpening on layers to get some sheen back in her hair.

Thanks, Paul; appreciate your comments.

Both the party and the shot were personal high-points for me.

My niece Olivia, who I snapped blowing out her birthday candles above, asked my
opinion on what dSLR she should save up for. She's going to be taking a photography
course at high school in the fall semester, and decided her P&S wouldn't do.

Completely unbiased, I of course suggested the K-x. :) Here's hoping that she
sees the wisdom of that choice when she's finally got her money from her summer
job in a couple of months' time.
