I've hand-held a 300/2.8 with the 1.7x AF adapter on it. That's a sweet combination (a 500mm/4.5). But you won't find that going on eBay for $700 ... The Tamron 300/2.8 is a darn good lens, too; I only switched to a Pentax A* because I got an offer that I couldn't refuse.
