We bought a waterfront cottage last year and all of a sudden I'm
interested in wildlife & maritime photography. My biggest lens is an
old old OLD Tamron 70-210 and its contacts are problematic, the camera
can only see it half the time. This would see very limited use,
probably just the cottage, so I was thinking maybe a used big old
fixed-focal-length telephoto like my Dad used to use 30 years ago. I
went poking around on EBay and sure enough, there are big old lenses
for sale there regularly.
For my K20, are there any classics that I should particularly lean
toward or turkeys to stay away from? I'm assuming nearly anything
will fit, e.g. the "SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5 4.5/500 Telephoto" with the
bidding currently at around $700 Canadian. Any good online references
to consult?

"Big" telephoto? If I still had a Pentax DSLR I'd have a 600/4 FA*....
With a 300/2.8 FA* for hand-held flight shots.
But that's me...
