Point taken. But then the deception is good only until you open the backpack and pull out the camera, isn't it?

OTOH, a ready to use monopod with a medium sized ball head is a very interesting self defense tool... too bad they usually need replacement after the second kneecap or so. ]:-))

I usually carry my tripods - and the mono - either with shoulder straps or soft cases. Maybe you could fix one of your current monopods to the outside of the backpack until you get the new one?

If I'm going to be spending a couple of days wandering around chicago,
I don't want my backpack to scream "filled with expensive photo gear".

I tried a quick test of using my small tripod, which will fit,  as a
monopod, and it'll have to do.
