The issue is about imposing something on an animal that he had no say
in. It's about imposing something on an animal for ~our~
entertainment. It's about imposing something on an animal that
~might~ have side-effects without him having a say in the matter.

Frank, I have some news for you:
Dogs are now kept primarily for entertainment purposes and we impose a lot of stuff on them.
We teach them stupid little tricks to entertain us.
We impose obedience training (as foreign a concept as there is for most dogs) on them both for our entertainment and to make them more agreeable to us.
We impose cages on them when they would rather sleep on the bed.
We impose chastity and invasive surgery on them to keep them from procreating uncontrollably. When we do let them breed, it is by an arranged marriage system (if we are the smart ones, anyway) so that we can carry on traits that we like and eliminate those that we don't. We ensure that they don't free themselves from the bonds of slavery by imposing collars and leashes on them.
We tell them what to eat and when to eat it.
We insist that they learn our language because their language is too subtle for us to understand.
We insist that they be bathed and shampooed from time to time.
We make them wear silly little costumes and most Bearded Collie owners that I know put the fur near their eyes in braids
And yes, some of us mix up unsweetened Kool-Aid and dye them purple.

The latter dogs are generally the most spoiled and pampered animals that there are. If you looked at that shot that Charles posted of the multi coloured Bichon, do you really think that dye job would have happened if the dog hadn't been a willing accomplice? Nothing was "imposed" on that dog, and unsweetened Kool-Aid isn't toxic.
