While the result is gorgeous, I'd have liked a little more below the
bottom curve of the petals; I can't -- and this may certainly be my
deficiency! -- tell quite which angle I'm looking at as it stands.

I agree; if I'd been paying attention I'd have done this in portrait and
shown the stem below the flower. But that's why I called it a test
shot. :-) I was busy fussing with the flash settings and bringing the
clipping under control.
