Bob, It is exactly the reverse.
Profesional films are usually refrigerated, so film vendors age them, snip test them, and ship them refrigerated with a short expiration date to allow for maximum consistency. The batch numbers can be used to obtain lots of the same manufacture for best consistency too.
Consumer customers are generally not so critical on color consistency ... they don't need the snip tests and batch number pedigree. They rarely refrigerate their films. The films are often on the shelf in dealers for a long time too. So to promote a long shelf life, both for the dealers and consumers, they're not pre-aged, not shipped refrigerated, and have a long due date lifespan.
