Joe,
Charlotte is 90 miles, Asheville is a little bit further.  Roanoke and
even Atlanta may be on the route in for some folks.  Pick a cheap
place to fly into and get a ride with somebody the rest of the way.
If you camp on the mountain, expenses are what you eat and drink.
There is normally no camping there, only a picnic grove with some
restrooms.  If you want a shower, you're out of luck or you get a
motel room in town (15 min. away).  You will want to buy a barbeque
sandwich at the cafeteria (ask Frank).  It is often wet and cool
temps.
You can only guard the beer if you pledge sobriety.
