I wouldn't be surprised if the NY Chowder had it's roots in the fifties. There are still a couple of old timers around. I'll see if I can get some info on that. Chowder luncheon meetings were at Sardis in the theater district during the eighties, a decade that included the majority of my stint in NY. Chowder always hosted a guest speaker. If the membership didn't like what the speaker had to say, they would sometimes throw dinner rolls at him or, on rare occasions, her. I remember Janet Guthrie had to duck a few rolls one time. IMPA was a bit more restrained. It met just a few blocks away at Mama Leone's on 48th street and included more real journalists and fewer wealthy sport car buffs. Sardis, is still in business, I believe, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chowderheads still gather there. Mama Leone's is long gone, but IMPA survives.

I don't have any good pictures of it, but my MG wears the grill badge

I'll bet he did. Some folks in SMOG (Sprite Midget Owner's Group)
liked to talk about how in his 80's he got in trouble for skinny
dipping in a hotel pool at midnight with a couple of cute women in
their 20's.
