PCD didn't have an openly published specification that three dozen manufacturers of software have produced products to use at no charge.

I think there's just as much chance that DNG will go away as there is that TIFF will go away. Adobe holds the licensing rights to both of them. Both have openly published specifications and are in wide use, at no royalty charge, across the industry.
