actually, it was a very strange fault on the lens. I don't know for sure if
it was a crack, a scratch (on an internal element?), or something else, but
it proves the value of taking a flashlight when you inspect a lens. I
probably wouldn't have noticed it by the ambient light alone, but whatever
it was it stretched across most of the diameter of the element.

The seller's a prime cut of idiot, as well as dishonest. That lens was over £1400 new the last time it was on sale here. Assuming it's worth nothing now and maybe £700 in as advertised condition, there is a lot of discretion to get it fixed and at least get something for it.
