The Nauga is actually native to the Naugatuck river valley in Connecticut,
found mostly near Naugatuck, where .they were hunted to extinction for the
manufacture of cheap luggage and furniture.
That was my understanding also. But I thought the river was named after them
in that they were all tucked into the river.

The other big celebrity death of the day, Mr. Roarke:

I've read a few other obits and bios. None of them mention my most
enduring memory of the man, shilling Chrysler Cordobas with seats of
"Corinthian Leather".
Well, the CBC just played the soundtrack to the Cordoba commercial and
made
honorable mention of Khan.
Thankfully, they failed to mention Fantasy Island.
I was crushed when, years later, I discovered that there's no such
thing as Corinthian Leather, that it was a plastic fake. My world has
never been the same since...
Corinthian Leather is not fake. It is taken from the hides of Naugas,
which
are an animal related to the Gnu.
They are native to the Peloponnese area of Greece. Corinth is the nearest
center of habitation, and is where the hides of the Nauga were cured and
prepared for shipment.
Now you know.
