Hi Bill, First off, Jaume != Juan. Jaume's explanation is accurate, of course.
Second, I call Godwin on the gas chamber comment. Third, I kind of, mostly, agree. A bullfight (and I have been to a few) strikes me as a barbaric spectacle, the last remnant of a tradition going back thousands of years. That, and the realization that it is quite possible that this is something that will disappear in my lifetime, is part of what attracts me to it. Fourth: 48 bulls are sacrificed each year in Pamplona. The fighting bull is bred just for that, and up until the last day, he's treated a lot better than any other kind of cattle. If I had to choose, I think I'd rather be a fighting bull than a cow raised in a feedlot for macdonalds meat. What I'm trying to say is, yes, it seems cruel and barbaric, but the burger joints of any American or Canadian city probably go through a lot more animals than the ones killed during the bullfighting fiestas of any town in Spain. And those are animals who truly have had an unhappy existence, marked by cruelty, as opposed to a good life ending in a bullfight. So, I agree with you in principle and sentiment, but until we are all vegetarians, which we could be, I'll keep coming to Pamplona. Then all those animals would not even exist and we'll all be happy. j Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com On 11 Jul 2008, at 17:20, "William Robb" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jaume Lahuerta" > Subject: Re: PESO: Encierro (published, sort of) > > > I was expecting a response like this one...just some clarification: > > Note that there is a difference between the 'Encierro' and the > 'Corrida'. > The first one is just to conduct, at 8am, the bulls from one place > to the Plaza, where the > Corrida, the actual bullfighting, will take place in the afternoon. > This takes normally from 2 > to 5 (intense) minutes. > During the Encierro, since there is a lot of people, narrow and > slippery streets, protective > walls...there may be some injuries to the bulls, mainly when they > fall down or when they face > someone and then others beat them in order to attract their > attention.
