Bill, this shot from Matthew is very similar to how i shoot horse jumping. I focus at the base of the jump, which will give me some DOF in front and a bit behind, and what for "the moment" then shoot.
Sounds simply, but it took a while to get the timing down. Lots of useless film, t first.
