Thanks, Doug (and hi Bran!).

Funny thing is when I opened Firefox 3 this morning, the fonts were OK. 
In fact they were much more finely defined than in Firefox 2 and other
Linux applications.  Maybe I just needed a re-boot to get the program to
use the correct font engine.

I checked"layout.css.dpi".  Currently it's set to -1, which means
(apparently) that Firefox uses "the host system’s logical resolution or
96, whichever is greater" - whatever that means......

Anyway, at this stage I'll leave things alone and maybe play with the
setting later.
