The Manfrotto legs are better made than Sliks or Velbons, in general.  
Parts are generally a little more readily available in my experience  
too. But if you're not using the tripod particularly heavily, the  
Slik or some of the Velbon models (the Camargue comes to mind) are a  
good, lower cost option.

Regards heads, I would stick with Manfrotto, Giottos, Gitzo or some  
of the higher end heads. The tripod head is the part you need to work  
with every day, and most of the less expensive ones become an  
annoyance very quickly.
