It's a free program, written by volunteers, that will almost do what 
Photoshop will do.

I think the Linux/Unix version will do more than the Windows version. 
After all, it's a Linux/Unix program written by Linux/Unix users for 
other Linux/Unix users. The Windows versions are an after-thought.

There are things Photoshop can do that Gimp can't do. OTOH, you can't 
just download the latest version of Photoshop and use it forever without 
paying Adobe.

... well, you can, but finding cracked versions and keygens and all that 
other fuss is more bother than I'm willing to go through. I'd rather pay 
for the product and know I've got Adobe behind me instead of against me.

I used GIMP before I had the where-with-all to buy Photoshop. Photoshop 
upgrades are almost painless (to the pocketbook) by comparison.

If I couldn't afford Photoshop, I'd use GIMP.

GIMP's a whole lot easier to get rid of if it doesn't perform as promised.
