I don't know if it's a valid reason on modern aircraft, but it's better to be safe than sorry IMO. But the reason for not using it during a flight is what you said, they are afraid wireless will mess with their electronics. I wonder about the modern aircraft thing too, but I'd rather be safe than sorry too. And since tons of people carry mobile phones on flights, they are still there to be used in case of terrorists. The thing with the article, was, as far as I could tell the flight attendant wasn't familiar with the iphone and didn't realize it could be used sans phone mode, ergo, when the guy said he wasn't using the phone the flight attendant didn't believe him. And the flight attendant was a jerk too. If there are good reasons for a rule, it's not always knucklehead.
